Explaining the Spill
The Gulf oil spill has ballooned into a problem of such proportions—from the gross underestimates of the size of the spill, to questions about overlooked safety issues and the chemical dispersants used to aid clean-up, that it can be daunting to process it all. Fortunately, Friends of the Earth has taken up that task—with detailed information about the Gulf oil spill, the history of oil spills, the environmental repercussions and calls to move beyond fossil fuels.
As for some of those "environmental implications," here are a few sobering thoughts from their site: The up to 20,000 barrels of oil being spilled each day will likely soon eclipse the Exxon Valdez spill, will poison animal and marine life and disrupt the "food chain as a whole."
