The Green League Gears Up for Election Day

In what is shaping up to be one of the most important Congressional election cycles of the last decade, the nonprofit League of Conservation Voters (LCV) is campaigning hard to convince voters across the country to dump politicians that do not support various pro-environmental initiatives. The group’s so-called "Dirty Dozen" list includes 12 incumbent politicians—mostly senators and congressmen, but also one gubernatorial candidate—who all share an antipathy toward bills containing environmental protection provisions.

Rick Santorum (PA)

This year’s Dirty Dozen list includes 10 Republicans—Senators George Allen (VA), Conrad Burns (MT), Rick Santorum (PA), Jim Talent (MO), and Representatives Katherine Harris (FL), J.D. Hayworth (AZ), Richard Pombo (CA), Deborah Pryce (OH), Charles Taylor (NC) and Heather Wilson (NM)—and only two Democrats—Dan Boren (OK) and Henry Cuellar (TX). Republican Representatives Tom Delay (TX) and Bob Ney (OH) were originally on the list until they each decided not to seek re-election. And for the first time, LCV has added a gubernatorial candidate, Colorado Republican Bob Beauprez (currently a Congressman), to the list.

LCV doesn’t focus only on negative political positions. The organization has endorsed more than 90 different candidates—Republican, Democrat and Independent—for Congressional and gubernatorial races across the country. Any voter who cares about environmental issues should take a look at the lcv.org website before heading out to the polls next Tuesday.
