True FoodCopy

An app for shoppers who want to avoid genetically modified and genetically engineered foods.
Up to 70% of the thousands of packaged foods sold in supermarkets contain genetically modified (GM) or genetically engineered (GE) foods, according to the Center for Food Safety. While U.S. food labels must reflect ingredients, they are not required to state if GM/GE foods have been used. The True Food app helps shoppers identify foods that contain GM/GE foods. The True Food app gives users a “green” list of food products made by companies that work to avoid GM/GE foods. A “red” list alerts users to ingredients that are likely to have come from the most common GE crops such as corn, canola, cotton, and soy. The red list items are produced by manufacturers who have confirmed their products may have or are likely to have been made with GE ingredients.

The app also offers tips on avoiding GM/GE foods, news and activism opportunities. True Food was launched by The True Food Network, the grassroots action arm of the Center for Food Safety, a nonprofit organization in Washington, DC.

The Center for Food Safety advocates for healthy food production technologies and a sustainable food system. The True Food shoppers’ guide is available for Android, iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
