Go East Young Timberman!

The scene is familiar: A beautiful old forest succumbing to chain saws; huge logs loaded onto trucks; protesters holding banners from perches in favorite trees; others milling about, blocking the trucks, pleading with the loggers, desperately trying to stop the cutting. But these trees aren’t redwoods or Douglas firs – they’re oaks. And this isn’t the Pacific Northwest – it’s southern Illinois. Indeed, while the American media’s attention has been focused on the jobs-versus-owls controversy of the Pacific Northwest, battles over forests are beginning to rage throughout the East and Southeast.
