China’s forty-year efforts at reforestation have been admirable…but misguided. A young forest gives back to the atmosphere barely 25-percent of the water it takes up. The rest goes into woody growth…for 25-years. A mature tree gives back as much as 95-percent of the water it takes up, thereby providing for rain on the leeward edge of the forest. The planting practices for the past forty-years have not stopped the desertification as a result.
