FloDesign of Wilbraham, Massachusetts, has designed a wind turbine that draws its inspiration from jet engines. The company recently announced that it was naming Lars Andersen, who was formerly the president of China operations of Vestas—the world’s largest manufacturer of turbines—its new chief executive.

With this new model, FloDesign hopes to create one of the world’s most efficient wind turbines. The company has received a $34.5 million second round of funding, $8.3 million of which came from a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency. Although new to manufacturing wind turbines, FloDesign has been constructing specialized equipment for the aerospace industry and government agencies for the past 20 years. Early wind turbine models feature tube enclosures that already demonstrate improved efficiency.
