What are some simple things I could do to green the office I work in?

No matter how green your office may be already, there is surely room for improvement somewhere.

Shouting from the Mountaintop

This July, four moms climbed 14,000 feet to the summit of Mount Rainier in Washington State to demand that Washington’s largest contributor to global warming—the TransAlta coal-fired power plant in Centralia—be shut down by 2015 and replaced with efficient and renewable energy. E sat down with Jennifer, Julie, Katie and Genevieve to talk about preparing for the big climb, being superheroes to their kids and putting pressure on the governor.

Face It, Climate Change Is Real

Since the Environmental Protection Agency determined in December 2009 that climate change is a threat to the planet and human health—and was being driven by human activity—the agency has received 10 petitions challenging its findings. On July 29, 2010, the EPA denied those petitions.

Altered Wheat May Pose a Risk

I always thought cotton was eco-friendly, but I recently heard otherwise

There’s a lot “bad” about conventionally grown cotton—cotton grown with the aid of synthetic chemicals, that is. The Organic Trade Association (OTA), a nonprofit trade group representing America’s burgeoning organic cotton industry, considers cotton “the world’s dirtiest crop” due to its heavy use of insecticides.

The Great Gulf Chemical Experiment

Documents show that chemical dispersants were used heavily in trying to mitigate the massive BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, despite concerns over their toxicity.

How are wild turkeys faring in the U.S.

By the early 1900s, only 30,000 wild turkeys roamed the continental U.S., having been exterminated across almost half their former range. Today, as many as seven million roam the countryside across every U.S. state except Alaska . Pictured: Wild turkeys photographed near Little River, Georgia.

Obama Signs On for the Sea

On July 19, with the cap on the BP wellhead apparently holding, President Obama finally signed a long-hoped-for Executive Order establishing a new conservation-oriented Ocean and Coastal Policy for the United States.

Transforming Park Ave

Since 2008, the New York City Department of Transportation has promoted the Summer Streets Initiative—temporarily closing Park Avenue and connecting streets to motorized vehicles during the first three Saturdays of August in order to encourage more sustainable forms of transportation like walking and biking.
